A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over safety standards.
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
